British Gas and ScottishPower up prices, while EDF commit to freezing at current rates this winter.
In October, when SSE announced a 9.4% price rise, it was expected that other suppliers would follow suit.
British Gas has announced a rise of 7% for domestic electricity and gas tariffs, while ScottishPower have just increased an average increase of 8.9% for electricity tariffs and 2% for gas.
It would seem predictions were correct, with consumer groups now expecting E.ON and Npower to raise their domestic electricity and gas prices soon.
EDF are the only company so far to have ruled out a domestic price rise until at least March 2011.
It remains to be seen just how much the average domestic energy bills will rise this winter, but in a currently harsh economic climate there is mounting press coverage on suppliers’ justification for upping their prices.
Supplier statements have continued to quote increasing wholesale prices as the reason for the price hikes.
As wholesale energy prices affect both the domestic and business energy markets, it is probably safe to assume that business gas and electricity prices will also rise.
