The french-owned energy giant is only raising prices by an average of 3.9%, less than half that of other major suppliers.

EDF will only raise its prices by 3.9%

The increase will come into force from January 3, and looks like a serious attempt by the firm to actually compete with rivals.

The move will affect 2.4 million households, but EDF has warned that green levies must be reduced as promised, or it will re-assess its prices in early 2014.

The company said: “The company has taken action ahead of the outcome of the Government’s review of the costs of ECO and other schemes.”

“If the Government makes bigger changes to the costs of its social and environmental schemes than EDF Energy has anticipated, the company pledges to pass these savings onto customers.”

“However, if changes to social and environmental programmes are less than anticipated, the company may have to review its standard variable prices again.”

The increase means only one of the six largest suppliers has not announced a price rise yet this winter, E.ON Energy UK.
