CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme
Registration for the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme closed on the 30th of September 2010
What is the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme?
It was previously known as the Carbon Reduction Commitment and is a scheme designed to reduce the energy consumption and carbon emissions of the larger business electricity users in the UK.
CRC Scheme In Summary
- Only businesses with half-hourly electricity meters are affected
- Participation is mandatory
- Most businesses only need to disclose information
- Only full participants are required to purchase carbon allowances
Which businesses does it affect?
All companies with a half-hourly meter are required to participate in some way under the CRC.
Most of the estimated 20,000 half-hourly metered businesses in the UK are only required to disclose information once every few years that tells the administrator about your energy usage.
There are an estimated 5,000 Half-Hourly metered businesses in the UK that are required to participate fully in the CRC scheme. These are the half-hourly metered companies that consumed 6,000 MWh or above in 2008. These companies do not only have to monitor and record their CO2 emissions, but also have to purchase allowances equal to their CO2 emissions each year.
What do we have to do?
If your business has at least one half-hourly meter using under 6,000MWh
You are required to make an information disclosure about your CO2 usage.
Information disclosure is done via the online registry on the environment agency website. Please be aware that registration is compulsory, and should you fail to make an information disclosure, or submit an incomplete application, you risk being fined £500 per undisclosed half-hourly metered supply.
If your business has at least one half-hourly meter using 6,000MWh or more
You are required to register as full participants, and must purchase allowances for your CO2 usage, so there is a massive incentive for you to reduce your carbon emissions.
For businesses with such a large usage, every situation is different, and will require a bespoke assessment of your needs. Please contact us via the form below should you require assistance with your new CRC scheme obligations.
