British Gas have announced they are to suspend door to door selling for an initial period of 3 months
The Centrica owned company has called the practice “outdated”.
The decision follows harsh criticism of door to door selling by Consumer Focus.
Consumer Focus said that customers who arranged their contracts from salesmen on their doorstep often ended up with a worse deal.
British Gas are the second of the big six UK energy suppliers to put a stop to selling energy contracts on the doorstep, with Scottish and Southern Energy having already put a stop to doorstep sales.
British Gas said it has reduced the number of employed sales agents from 1,300 in 2006 to 400 now.
“Doorstep selling, in its current form, is no longer a sustainable way to engage or build a relationship with customers,” said Ian Peters of British Gas.
