This week saw the launch of Bloom Energy’s new fuel cell technology, called the Bloom Box.
The Bloom Box was launched this week at the eBay headquarters in California. The launch was attended by former secretary of state, Colin Powell, and Arnold Schwarzenegger, governor of California.
The box is designed by a former Nasa scientist, and it uses fuel cells, which convert hydrogen and oxygen into electricity by an electrochemical process, to generate power.
The Box can generate power independently, without the need to be attached to the electric grid, meaning the Bloom Box has many potential uses in areas where there is no electricity grid.
Bloom’s new product has environmentalist benefits too, as fuel cells are generally much more environmentally friendly than most other sources of generating power, as there is no burning needed.
With such high profile Bloom Box users such as Wal-mart, Google, Fed-ex and Coca Cola it’s little wonder that the launch of the new fuel cell technology has created quite a buzz.
There is some scepticism surrounding the Bloom Box, however, mostly due to the fact that Bloom Energy are yet to release sufficient data about the new product, leaving most still not entirely sure how the technology works, or how valuable it is.
